Google's latest social media project is up and running, and it looks like it is going to be big. Maybe bigger than Facebook. Maybe bigger than Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn combined! Google plus has been engineered from the start with the advantage of having these other successful social networking sites to model itself from. Copying the best bits and improving their weaknesses. At the moment, most of us use LinkedIn for our professional network, and Facebook for our social network and as a business marketing tool. This already creates a conflict, because we don't really want to invite business contacts into our social network where they can pictures of us getting drunk at parties. So it's hard to build a business network on Facebook. Facebook offers us Pages, where we can connect as a business instead of an individual. This removes a lot of the personal touch, but allows us to communicate to them as a business. It's a very useful tool, but not perfect. Google plus provides a much better solution, by allowing us to divide our contacts and interactions into “Circles”. You can create as many circles as you like, and a contact can be a member of multiple circles. For example, I can connect with my customers in my “Work” circle, and my friends in my “Friend” circle. When I post about work, then my friends don't see it and vice versa. However, some of my friends are also customers, so they sit in both the “Work” and “Friends” circles so they see posts to both groups. Confused yet? The best way to learn about it is to have a go yourself. Let me know if you would like an invitation to join. I have about 140 invites left and am happy to share with our customers.
