How to choose a domain name

One of the most difficult decisions when setting up a website is choosing a domain name. The decision has been made even more complicated by the fact that your search engine rankings can be greatly improved by selecting a domain name containing relevant keywords.

The first thing to consider is your brand. What is the name that your customers know you by? If someone is searching for you directly, what will they type into Google?

Buy your company/trading name first.

The next priority is getting found when people are searching for the products or services that you offer. Sometimes it can be advantageous to buy a domain name like “bicyclerepairs.com.au” or “financialadvice.com.au”. By “super charging” your domain name with relevant keywords you can give yourself an advantage over your competitors in search engines.

Many of these keyword domain names have already been purchased, so if you see a good one, it's a good idea to buy it if you can.

Don't over do it.

If you are planning to start buying domain names that are related to keywords in your industry then there are really only two reasons to do it.

Firstly, you might be planning on building a series of mini websites and optimising each site for the specific keywords in each domain name. (i.e. one site for each domain name)

Or secondly, you might be buying them to stop your competitors from doing it first.

There is no advantage in buying domain names for all of the keywords in your industry unless you plan on building separate mini websites for each of the domain names that you buy. Google won't pay any attention to a domain name, regardless of the keywords in it unless it is sitting on a unique website.

So what do we recommend?

To make day to day business easier, it's best to own a domain name that is closely related to your brand. Your email addresses and the website URL on your business card should be www.YourCompany.com.au so that it is easy to remember and reinforces your brand.

If you have found a good, keyword based domain name then use that as your main URL to improve your rankings in Google and other search engines. This will give you a boost in rankings for the keywords in that domain name.

So in some cases it is advantageous to use two domain names.
